As President Trump decided that he will not be attending this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, he pushed the responsibility onto someone else – his press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. She will be representing Trump, as he will be absent for the second year in a row.
Last year, he boycotted the event because he was protesting “fake news” and the mainstream media, and this year, he conveniently is hosting a campaign rally the same night as the event. However, he did say this: “I sort of feel that the press is so bad. It’s so fake, it’s so made up. I mean, ‘sources say’ and they have no sources. They’re like novelists. I call them novelists,” in a radio interview.
The White House Correspondents Dinner is specifically to promote freedom of the press, which President Trump doesn’t seem to be understanding. Therefore, the “novelists” will be attending the event on April 28, as well as the rest of the Trump administration.
Usually at this event, people prepare speeches and jokes, where attendees will poke fun at the president and their administration. This is not good news for Sanders, because without a president there and only her to represent him, all eyes will be on her.
We already know she gets annoyed with members of the press during briefings, and now that Trump’s thrown her directly under bus, she is going to have to sit through it. It will definitely be interesting to see how this evening plays out, but one thing’s for sure is that Sanders is not looking forward to this one bit.
